2008 Aoraki LIANZA Weekend School A Great Success

On a fine Richmond morning 57 Librarians from various libraries and schools mainly from the Top Of the South Island but also from Christchurch and Dunedin gathered at the Tasman District Council Chambers for a great day.
Highlight of the day was our Keynote speaker, Kate de Goldi who inspired us with the importance of language, reading, libraries and books (we know that, but it was nice to hear!)

Another great speaker, Annette Mulligan spoke on managing stress in our lives. She handed out these great little Business Cards which had a Stress test indicator patch on the back. You put your thumb on the patch for ten seconds and it changed colour according to your level of stress. Black was Tense, red was Nervous,Green was calm and Blue was relaxed. For some reason mine stayed black all day!
The "Library thing" and "L Plate" were two other very popular sessions and everyone enjoyed the fantastic food from our local Cafe on Oxford.

With a great flurry of registration forms over the last few days we now have 57 participants (some half day). We have a great representation of libraries - the furthest is from Dunedin Public Library. We have our biggest attendence from schools ever - maybe Kate de Goldi is the drawcard.
The committeee is now hard at work doing the final preparations for a great day. We are hoping for fine sunny weather as our venue has a lovely private outdoor area.
We look forward to seeing you all and safe travelling particularly for those who have come from afar.

Believe it or not we are the number one hit for "LIANZA Cheesecake Monkeys" on Google. I probably shouldn't be so happy about that but it does say something about the value of choosing useful subject headings...

We are also the number one hit for "LIANZA Scarf"
and about #70 for "library technology blog "hey jude"" so we're doing okay just by riding on Judy's coat-tails... ;)

Congratulations Glen on your appointment as Vice President in the LIANZA 2007 elections :-) That's fantastic news!

Planning for the weekend is going well too. We have 52 registrations for the Saturday programme and 25 people coming to Broadgreen Intermediate on Friday night for nibbles, drinks and a look at their new library and resource rooms.

All we need now is to put on one of those fabulous, sunny Nelson days we're famous for ;-)

Yikes, another couple of weeks with no posts, well time for an update then. I'm gearing up for the nelson weekend at the moment and putting some resources together though still not sure exactly what I'll be saying. It was announced a few days ago that the event was fully subscribed which is an excellent result and I'm sure bodes very well for the day. Last weekend I was a tad distracted by running a stand at the Christchurch Armageddon Pulp Culture Expo which went really well and I have millions of photos of my stand but saw almost nothing of anything else that was there though I did meet John Rhys Davies of Lord of the Rings fame (Gimli) and snapped him around my props so that was a nice experience. Anyway, back to work (and thinking about the Blogging session) - isn't it amazing how fast time goes by? I could swear we were only throwing ideas around a few weeks ago and now it's nearly here and all booked up!

I hope you'll take some time to enjoy the Nelson restaurants, vineyards and beaches while you're here.
I spent last weekend in Christchurch and had a great time at the Rock OnZ concert at the Town Hall as well as cycling the rail trail from Motukarara to Little River despite a strong head wind.

Welcome back from your travels Glen, and thankyou for resending the invitation to contribute, which I failed to respond to the first time... you know what the start of the academic year is like.

Yes - we have put the Weekend up on NZ-Libs and registrations are looking healthy, so it is definitely happening. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to NMIT, and also to what looks to be a stimulating programme.

May the weather stay fine... (and looking back over the blog, I can report that my son is a huge Dr Who fan, such that I was making a Dalek birthday cake back in Feb..)

Well, it had to be time for a new post and since this is a blog (aka 'blog) and I've nothing of great import to say, I thought that I could treat this message as a good old fashioned diary entry.

I've been busy lately, working on a number of LIANZA projects and activities; the next issue of the New Zealand Library and Information Management Journal is nearly ready to be published (on the web) and will be printed and sent to members a little while later. Being Editor is both an honour and a responsibility plus it does mean hundreds of hours of going cross-eyed while trying to check and correct the APA references. :)

Where was I? Oh, right. So I've been thinking about what to say at the Weekend School - I've been making some notes while making this blog and also noticing things all over the place relating to blogs and libraries so I really ought to be writing them down as I go. To be honest, at this stage (still a month away from the weekend school) I'm full of ideas but have yet to make those ideas into notes and slides and the like. DON'T WORRY! I'm good for it, just never been and early-preparer.

Isn't it funny how once you start looking for something, it's everywhere? Like when a friends buys a new car, a model that you've never ever seen before and then notice 5 on trip home, and every day thereafter?

Over a week with no post, for shame! ;)

I've been on leave for 2 weeks and first toured the South of the South Island of New Zealand which was quite unknown to me and then spent a week at home recovering and pottering about. Loved it to bits and am now finding it hard to adapt back to work (well, all too easy really..) and am looking out of the windows longingly. Thought that I'd read and post to this blog while I was away but ended up having little time while on the road plus the internet policies of the libraries I visited (as you do..) all varied so no guarantees of free access!

In the interim I see an announcement has been made on NZ-Libs about the Weekend school, and the speakers, and the 'Blog so I guess it's definitely happening then!

This: for those who don't know it, is the most recognisable feature of Bluff at the very bottom of the South Island. what you can't see are the sandflies which were out in force at the time I was there so most of Bluff coastline was seen from inside of car... :)

To the right of this post (in the links section of this Blog) you can now find links to the "Technology without Tears" programme and a downloadable enrolment form! These documents are hosted on the main LIANZA site because this blogger software can host photos but not documents it seems. With these doucments in place it now seems that we can go public, announce the weekend school via NZ-Libs and get the LIANZA office to mail all Aoraki members - the question is who will do it? I'm happy to but I dare say that someone on the organising committee have a communications portfolio so I'll hang fire until I hear either way.

I was wondering if it would be an idea to have a few more introductions on this blog, as it is a place for collaboration and sharing of information between contributors - but will no doubt be read by others further down the track.

I would like to know what sort of blogging you do Glen? I would like to know what is happening in the Web 2.0 library world of the other contributors? There might be other things that folks want to know, and could ask? There might be other important links to share?

As for me, a presenter, I would love to have links to your current library websites, as well as any blogs or other Web 2.0 tools you are using - in fact anything that tells us about the 'library scene'.

I can suggest a great link to add for all information professionals. Everyone should keep an eye on the excellent blog by Sheila Webber - Information Literacy Weblog - as she has her finger on the global information literacy pulse. Her blog focusses on our 'core business' of information literacy. From there you jump to other parts of the blogosphere to cover literacy and other aspects of 'Library 2.0'.

That Dr Who Scarf!

I loved the comment about the Dr Who scarf, and the description of a Web 1.0 or Web 2.0 version. I have a great Dr Who scarf - I can see myself using it as a bit of a fun starter to a Web 2.0 presentation....

So now I'm going to stay on the Dr Who theme for just a little while, and share with you a post I wrote called Dr Who - and handheld technology! Such synergy!

There are a few Web 2.0 forward thinking ideas in that post being tossed around. Of particular interest is the paper from FutureLab which looks at the autonomous 21st century learner. Whether we encounter these 'nextgen' people in schools, libraries, or tertiary institutions - we need to be aware of the changing landscape of their information environment. Grab it for a read if you don't already have a copy.

Following a suggestion, I've uploaded a couple of photos of posters (bloggers!) from here and of the NMIT Library which is to host "Technology without Tears" which you will find down the right-hand-side (RHS) of the page AND I've started a related links list on th top RHS of the page - goodness me, isn't our little blog beginning to fill up!

The photo is to celebrate (hmm...) the arrival of autumn and is actually a picture of the original 1970's scarf worn by Tom Baker as Doctor Who. It was auctioned late last year. Relevance? VERy very low, but goodness knows what Googledom will make of it as a keyword and scarf-seekers may find themselves drawn to the blog - who knows?!

What a nice surprise to receive an invitation to join the LIANZA blog in preparation for the weekend workshops in April. Smiles across the Tasman to you all!

I just received a lovely email from Jo who suggested making it clearer on this blog that the Weekend School is not just fo Nelson, it's a Nelson/Marlborough/Tasman/Top of the South/anyone who wants to attend event and for convenience it is simply being held in Nelson.

She was absolutely right, I was taking it for granted that people knew this so I have just edited the title of this blog and now it says something different (and more descriptive) than it did 10 minutes ago. Last night, after setting up this blog I email Adrienne who has been my contact point so far and she has told the rest of the organsing committee about this site so I made a point of inviting them all to be authors of it too so hopefully they will start logging on and giving you (and each other) info straight from the horses mouths...

Hi, welcome to the Aoraki LIANZA Nelson Weekend School blog, which we intend to be a (web)log of the build up to this years event on April 28th for New Zealand Library and Information Profession people (for the sake of Google's keyword engine...), and perhaps actually be talked about in a session on the day (Hi future me, who's talking about this!!).

If you're reading this, please feel free to contribute as well, comment on our plans and progress, use the comments option to voice your optimism, concern, ideas or confusion - this 'blog is yours to play with.

Having said all of this, and apart from knowing that I'm coming up from Christchurch to speak on the 28th, I'm not sure what else is planned at this stage so look forward to post #2 for an update!
